After successfully suing Vonage and winning $120 million, Verizon has gone after Cox. In a suit filoed January 11, Verizon alleges that Cox has infinged on 8 patents related to delivering phone service over data communications networks. Verizon is seeking unspecified monitary damages and wants to block Cox from using the patents in the future.

The patents include U.S. Patent No. 6,104,711 for an “Enhanced Internet domain name server” to translate information from a public, packet-based network; and 6,282,574, “Method, server and telecommunications system for name translation on a conditional basis and/or to a telephone number.” The other concerned patents cover quality of service for communication sessions, enhanced signaling, network session management, and intercarrier signaling for connectivity between packet-based and circuit-switched networks.
