FCC Charman Kevin Martin said Tuesday at CES that the FCC will investigate the alleged blocking of certain data by Comcast. Comcast has long been accused of filtering certain data, including BitTorrent traffic. The accusations were proved by a test by the Associated Press and later by the EFF. A coalition of consumer groups and legal scholars asked the FCC to look in to the matter and to fine Comcast $195,000 per affected subscriber. Mashable points out that with Comcast’s 9.1 million subscribers, the fine (if agreed to by the FCC) could reach $1.77 trillion. While I agree that what Comcast is alleged to have done is wrong, a trillion dollar fine just seems excessive.
